Collaborate Day 2/3

Day 2 My presentations were related to Total Recall and Database Development Best Practices. The day ended with the invitation only Geek meet that also had the Linux installfest managed by the OTN staff.


Day 3 The Grand BI Debate, Topic was:
Are Pure Play BI Vendors on Road to Extinction?

The pro team was Joe Thomas, Matt Vranikar and Dan Vlamis

The against team was Steve Lemme, Scott Rappoport/Steve Stein and Shyam Varan Nath.

The debate was moderated by none other than Ian Abramson who will be the next IOUG President. Both sides gave good arguments such as pro side stated that Larger companies only can afford to invest in the integration of BI technologies with the Applications and Database. An example is IRI the owner of Oracle Express or the root of modern day OLAP was in heavy debt when Oracle bought it and helped revive the OLAP technology on Oracle platform.

The against side pointed out the cannibalization of products by Oracle such as OLAP/Essbase, Discoverer/OBIEE and pointed examples such as BI apps where link between Oracle Apps (EBiz) and OBIEE is a pureplay vendor - Informatica.

Later today is the Explore Colorado party and since it is snowing today in Denver, its great to "explore" Colorado inside a hall. The Exhibit hall closed today. So now things are coming towards a wrap up....

Gartner spends a lot of time reviewing the major Business Intelligence platform vendors and talking to the users of BI to come up with the updates in the Magic Quadrant. Here is the latest one released in Feb 2012. As you can see the notables in the Leaders Quadrant are Oracle taking the top stop in ability to execute with OBIEE and BI Applications (OBIA)  and IBM establishing itself as the visionary with Cognos and related offerings. Down the Memory Lane - BIWA SIG to BIWA Users Community to Analytics & Data Summit 2018

Let us go down the memory lane, it all started in 2006, soon after Oracle acquired Siebel . While Siebel was well known for CRM, the Siebel Analytics helped to get Oracle on the BI map. Mid-2006, was a good time to start a Special Interest Group (SIG) with focus on Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence. Same year Oracle acquired Synopsis    (Oct 2006) and then Hyperion in 2007.  The Technology-centric User Group - IOUG  facilitated the start of the DWBI SIG. DBBI SIG's first public appearance was in NYOUG 's summer and fall events in New York. Then this SIG was invited to present a session at Oracle Openworld 2006, in the Sunday User Group Day. After Oracle Openworld, Charlie Berger joined hands with this SIG, and brought along his rich experiences from the Life Science Group called OLSUG .
