Naval Postgraduate School Report on the Oracle Cloudera Solution for Big Data

This presentation discusses the results from a Naval Postgraduate School report that evaluated the Oracle Cloudera solution for big data in the context of a U.S. Marine Corps logistics project. The team began with a Cloudera Distribution for Hadoop cluster and an Oracle Database. After evaluating the initial architecture, they then evaluated how the Oracle Big Data Connectors and the Oracle Big Data Appliance would increase performance for the U.S. Marine Corps logistics application.

Massive Predictive Modeling
As enterprises continue to amass data at ever increasing rates and with greater variety -- what is being called “big data” -- the ability to extract value from that data demands high performance and scalable tools -- both in hardware and software. In various industries, enterprise take on massive predictive modeling projects, where the goal is to build models, one per customer, to understand behavior and tailor predictions at the customer level. These predictions can then be aggregated to assess future demand. When there are millions of customers, each with their own accumulated data, such as frequent utility meter readings or retail sales, the scale of such projects takes on a new dimension. Massive predictive modeling comes with challenges: effectively partitioning data, storing and managing resulting models, associating models with customers during prediction, as well as backup, recovery, and security.

While R has parallel capabilities to facilitate taking advantage of clusters of computers, significant coding is usually required to meet the challenges noted above. In this talk, we present the business problem and illustrate how Oracle R Enterprise, one of Oracle's R technologies, facilitates massive predictive modeling in a pair of succinct R scripts. With Oracle R Enterprise, the data, R scripts, and models all reside in Oracle Database, which simplifies and speeds production deployment.


Moving beyond Oracle Data Miner. What the Oracle DBA and Developer needs to know

OBIEE Data Visualization: The "How" and the "Why"

Architecting Multi-Tenancy Analytics in the Cloud Using OBIEE, Hadoop and Oracle DB

Architecting multi-tenancy in OBIEE along with Hadoop and Oracle DB poses multiple challenges which are not encountered in Enterprise IT implementations. Multi-tenancy is key in providing Analytics for Software-as-a-Service in the Cloud. The session will focus on:

- Seamless switching of OBIEE between Oracle DB for Dashboards to Hadoop Big Data for detail reports. This ensures complete synchronization between the strengths of Relational Database and Big Data maximizing the efficiency and productivity of Business Analytics.
- Architecting security based on Tenant serving multi-tenant data from single schema and single database thus minimizing storage and database administration.- Use of Flex Fields for addressing new business requirements for Tenants from the same schema without any change in ETL.

This can reduce turnaround time by 80%.
- Use of Logic Gates for addressing Tenant based aggregation requirements on the same presentation attribute without any change in ETL.
- Use of Dynamic Runtime Binding for Multi Hierarchy (Graph instead of a Tree Hierarchy) to address problem of a child node having multiple parents.
- Use of Tenant based Dynamic report switching on the same Dashboard minimizing new development. This enables to quickly address new reporting business requirements and reducing development time significantly.

- Use of Exchange Partition for data loads to provide extremely high ETL performance without any downtime on single instance of data warehouse thereby reducing storage and processing time.

Geomarketing Analysis: a developed solution for Italy's Leading Supermarket Chain, Unicoop Firenze

Unicoop Firenze is Italy's largest consumer cooperative, with more than one million consumer-members and sales of over 2 billion euros. It deployed a rich location intelligence system, with interactive geomarketing features, including detailed analysis of business facts and dynamic user-defined areas. The Unicoop system includes a geo-datawarehouse with dashboards to better evaluate business opportunities on a specific territory, on the base of statistical and socio-economical data coming from Institutional sources.
Unicoop and system integrator Bridge Consulting deployed this system on an Oracle Database Exadata Machine, using Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition, Oracle MapViewer, and Oracle Spatial Network Data Model and Geocoding features. The developed solution incorporates all of Business Intelligence systems and all of departmental systems, and supports Marketing, Development and Management divisions analyses.  Dashboard solution includes:
* Territorial analysis of supermarket-receipts
* Analysis of consumer-member behaviors
* Product traceability to contact the customer in case of any fault or problem
* Geomarketing analysis to:
-  Locate relationships of consumers and supermarkets
-  Study the territory capability to locate new stores
-  Study the market share by territories
-  Place Consumer-members, owned and competitor stores 

Bridge Consulting used the Oracle Spatial Network Data Model to generate trade areas (radial, polygonal, isochrones, isodistances), Oracle Spatial functions (sdo_geom) to refine areas dynamically for deep territorial analysis, as well as the integration of the geomarketing features with OBI Publisher. The Oracle Spatial geocoding capability and NOKIA's NAVTEQ ODF dataset were used in constructing the geo-datawarehouse.An excellent Return of Investment was realized from adopting an entire Oracle architecture for a scalable, performant system delivering valuable location intelligence insights.

Performance Gains with Spatial and Graph Using Oracle Database 12c

One of the most notable improvements with the Oracle Spatial and Graph option for 12c can be seen in performance increases in vector data operations. Enabling the Spatial Vector Acceleration feature dramatically improves the performance of commonly used vector data operations. With 12c, these operations run more efficiently in parallel than in prior versions through the use of metadata caching.
In this presentation, Steve Pierce will present use cases from Think Huddle clients who have migrated to 12c. These will illustrate how performance increases in serialized processing compare to the performance increases seen in parallel processes. These client's stories will demonstrate how parallelism is being used to greatly enhance the performance of batch geocoding. Performance improvements of 40% to 99% will be highlighted.
Nick Salem will share Neustar's experiences with its ElementOne platform, which is built on Oracle Database 12c, Oracle Real Application Clusters, Advanced Security, Partitioning, Spatial and Graph, Oracle WebLogic Server 12c, and Oracle Fusion Middleware MapViewer 12c. ElementOne leverages the latest 12c features in Oracle Spatial and Graph---including vector performance acceleration---for dramatic performance improvements with minimal code changes. In conjunction with other 12c capabilities like in-memory global temporary table, parallel executions, LOB operations, SQL and PL/SQL function and execution enhancements, and cross session result set cache, ElementOne has achieved substantial performance and efficiency gains.

For organizations that are facing processing limitations, learning about these enhancements will enable developers to make a small set of configuration changes and quickly realize significant performance improvements.
