OOW Monday - OTN Night

The OTN night started at 7PM, in the Tent, good food as usual and the drinks! Entertainment in the far side of the tent, Middle Eastern dancers... On the near side (towards 3rd st) was the Trivia sponsored by Blackberry. I was drafted to be on the stage with 5 other contestants to fight it out for a Blackberry, in front of the crowd!

It was a tie with 300 points each, the other contestant from was from Canada. The questions were in three different categories - about Oracle , about RIM/Blackberry and about San Francisco.

So what was my winning strategy? Let me explain it in Exadata terms. The storage index is a new concept which is not a pointer to the row or block rather a negative index, i.e. where not to look for data. Likewise, I won with a similar strategy today, the last question was about San Francisco and neither on knew the answer, the other contestant answered and lost the point on the tie breaker, I won... so my "negative" strategy of not answering won me the Blackberry!!

Gartner spends a lot of time reviewing the major Business Intelligence platform vendors and talking to the users of BI to come up with the updates in the Magic Quadrant. Here is the latest one released in Feb 2012. As you can see the notables in the Leaders Quadrant are Oracle taking the top stop in ability to execute with OBIEE and BI Applications (OBIA)  and IBM establishing itself as the visionary with Cognos and related offerings. Oracle Openworld Sep 22-26, 2013 is (almost here)

Oracle Openworld Sep 22-26, 2013 is almost here!  This is an event I have been attending since 2003 and have been lucky enough to be a speaker in an average of 1+ session every year. While the event has grown in size, mainly due to Oracle acquisitions, it has remained by far the largest professional event I have ever attended. My guess for this year is close to a total of 50,000 attendees spread between the Openworld, JavaOne, MySQL Connect, Customer Experience and HCM events.. The line of keynotes for Oracle Openworld 2013 is quite interesting, with Larry Ellison speaking on Sunday and Tuesday, historically his Wed afternoon keynote used to be the biggest one where in past he has announced Exadata and other big products. In recent years though, I noticed, he started announcing the new major products on Sunday evening and this allowed the attendees to learn about it during the event and not wait for Oracle to publicly unveil the products only on Wed afternoon.
